Denali Park afternoon

Because of our early start this morning, although we’d had a fairly long tour it was still before noon when we returned to our resort. After a mixed sun and cloud morning, rain keeps threatening, but it’s nothing more than spits. It’s still windy but nothing like last evening.

I had coffee and a bit of a relax, then took the shuttle bus over to the Denali Park Visitors center. It looks interesting, with displays and short films, but I didn’t have much time before catching another shuttle to the Sled Dog demonstration. Denali doesn’t allow snow mobiles, so in the winter sled dogs are the main form of transportation. There were about 25 huskies enjoying their summer vacation. It was quite hot for them (about 19C) so they were snoozing in the sun. But when the time came for the demo they were more than eager!

Afterwards I took the shuttle back to the Visitors centre, then walked over to the trailhead for Horseshoe Lake. It’s a popular trail not far from the centre, very well marked, and about 2 ½ miles. There are some hills and it’s a very pretty walk around the lake and along the river. There are several beaver dams.

There is a lot of information on hikes and other activities at the visitors centre. And trails are very well marked!

By the time I finally caught the shuttle back to the resort I was very tired. A quick shower, some time on the internet, then I decided to do take-out and bring it back to my cabin for an earlyish night.
